At the very least the child should be protected once he or she is viable. I think surely we can all agree that the death of an 8 month old baby IS murder.

*about 1% of abortions are due to rape or incest
*about 6% are due to medical conditions
*about 47% of women that get abortions have had a prior abortion (so it’s birth control for them)
*about 93% are because the child is not wanted. Isn’t that a sad statement. Can you look your children in the face and say, I wanted you but not your little sister so I aborted her. People need to discuss options with these pregant women and also discuss post abortion stress syndrome

I think one of the real problems is that we don’t have a high value on human life anymore. That is a very sad thing to say about our society but it’s true none the less.

*I think the government should try to protect the unborn.

Funny that a woman can murder her baby but if another person does it while commiting a crime then it’s murder…. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act.

Conservatives are for individual rights. What is being lost in your syllogism is the definition of the individual. As far as the child is concerned it is only a "clump of cells" before you know that it exists. It is not a question of what one does with their own body, but what one does with a separate body with its own, unique DNA structure.

I’d posit the quality of individuality (and thus rights) to a fetus very early in its life. It has a heartbeat at three weeks, long before most people know they are pregnant, especially in cases where couples are not actively trying to become pregnant. Brain waves exist at six weeks. Fetal development is rapid.

And no, I am not against killing in any circumstance. They are several circumstances where I see killing as not only necessary but just. It is not because I am against killing that I am against abortion, but rather for the rights of individuals who are not able to defend themselves.

If you support abortion, you might as well move the "cut-off" date well past birth.

Like you said about the government, it has a few functions that us conservatives will agree to. Protection of private property, protection of the nation and protection of life being taken unjustly by others. This would fall under the last one.

There are a lot of conservatives such as myself who are pro-choice. The abortion discussion is really not an issue though. The Republicans are pandering to the Christian right with it. It really has nothing to do with being conservative.

just because i have the technology to abort you, does not suggest that the government should not protect you from this insane thinking. it is one of the primary functions of government to do so.
no one has the right to impose their will on someone elses body (without their consent), even if they are very old or very young.
