What are some valid arguments on pro choice abortion?

December 12009

I have to do a powerpoint for abortion and i dont know what to write about.

Here are some of my thoughts as a pro-choice individual that supports abortion rights.

It’s not hard to justify an abortion when you’re educated on pregnancy development and abortion procedures. Despite what many like to claim, a fetus or embryo is not a baby. And abortion is not murder, since you can’t kill something that has not been born. Sure, an embryo is alive, but so are my houseplants and so are the organisms in yogurt, but no one screams murder when I eat yogurt. An embryo is completely insignificant. It has no thought or feelings and definitely shouldn’t trump the rights of a living, breathing human being. It is insulting to women to say a ball of insignificant cells deserves more rights than we do.

I had an abortion at 5 weeks gestation. The embryo I aborted was about the size of a sesame seed and looked like a very tiny seahorse. I know what I did, and I know I didn’t do anything wrong. It was an unplanned pregnancy, and given my situation at the time it would not have been fair to me to continue the pregnancy and allow it to develop into an unwanted child I would not be capable of caring for. I did the responsible thing.

What I don’t understand is how anyone can oppose abortion, I have yet to hear a reasonable, factual supporting statement. I can only conclude people reach a pro-life stance through misinformation and/or ignorance. An embryo is not a child, and abortion is not murder, simple as that. To not support a woman’s choice is to not support women’s rights. A pro-life stance is offensive to women who would like to think you consider them a little more valuable than a blastocyst. Taking away a woman’s choice causes immense harm to women and children. Women either become forced to continue a pregnancy against their will, the equivalent of rape, or to acquire an abortion illegally putting their health and lives at risk. If they’re forced to continue an unwanted pregnancy you end out with an unwanted child who could very well face an unstable life of neglect and abuse. I value the lives of women and children, not those of embryos. I just see it as having my priorities straight.

You will need to know the difference between pro-choice and pro-abortion. Pro-choice is limited to the belief abortion is a woman’s choice, but doesn’t necessarily mean someone agrees with aboriton. A pro-abortion individual both supports abortion and women’s right to choose.

I have answered a few hundred questions about abortion on YA, feel free to look through them. Also feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Best of luck on your assignment!

There is none. Abortion is a cheap way for people to be out of responsibility for their actions. They didn’t wrap it before they tapped it. Therefore, they should live with taking care of that child. Put yourself in that baby’s shoes.

It’s her body, not yours. Until you are in her shoes, how can you really understand the situation (i.e. how can a middle aged man really understand what a 14 year old girl is going through)

rape and incest pregancies…not everyone that has an abortion has one to absolve responsibilty. not to mention some women have to have one in order to save their own life. Some conditions such as fighting the effects of chemo-therapy or cancer can kill the mother. (as well as the baby). Your valid arguments can come from those situations, that should keep you busy for a while.

    Then read your books more!

The whole abortion debacle has to do with these factors:
    - What rights a woman has over her own body
    - When exactly a baby is considered to be ‘alive’
    - What rights the father has
    - What options a woman has if she has been raped
    - What rights a doctor has to agree to or deny the abortion
    - What rights the parent of a pregnant minor has
    - When during a pregnancy an abortion can be safely performed

Look for more information (you’re on the Internet!) and study carefully.

Even if we were to assume that a fetus was a person and was entitled to the full rights of a human being, that wold not justify forcing the woman to act as an incubator for it against her will Amendment XIII Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. For a great philosophical paper on the issue read,

It’s not very long and it addresses all the issues very plainly.

Yeah I am sure your close minded Christian opinions really helped the kid out. And I do not think it is possible for this kid to put themselves into the shoes of a bunch of dividing cells since cells do not wear shoes last time I checked.

On to your answer: First off as I above stated in the first months it is only cells dividing and forming. How dare anyone tell a women what she can or cannot do concerning her own body and medical decisions. While respecting the right of people whose religious beliefs prohibit them from doing certain things we must also respect the rights of all people no matter what their spiritual beliefs may be. Abortion cuts back on the amount of unwanted and abused children in this world. The largest group and also fasted growing group of homeless people in the U.S. are children. In the cases of rape and incest is it really fair for a women to have to carry and give birth to the result of this rape? If abortion is outlawed women will go back to having back alley abortions that are extremely dangerous. The most important thing to remember here is that it is a women’s choice what to do with her body, and nobody should be able to tell her what she can or should do with it. Places like Planned Parenthood help women in all situations, while concentrating on educating young women on safe sex and birth control.

I would HIGHY recommend steering clear of religious fanatics if you want a passing grade on this paper.

meh. hard bcause im pro life, but the only real resoning i accept for killing babies, sob, is that a woman could be raped and have a child she cant care for or doesnt want, or that a mother may die if she goes thrugh labour or ghas a c section. this is the best reasoning that a pro life person sees for pro choice, so you really should use it.

There’s the classic my body my choice.

    Then theres:

We don’t all believe in God (some of us believe in reincarnation, or the soul of the baby will come back in the next pregnancy the mother might have.)

Some of us don’t believe that the baby has a soul until a certain part of pregnancy or until birth

Killing a fetus is equivalent to killing sperm.

A woman is more than a fetus making the fetus superior is insulting to the woman.

Women being able to control our own fertility gives us a power to bypass the prison of our anatomy(i.e. in the case of rape)

Some woman do it to protect their child from misery, poverty, and the feeling of being unwanted whether in adoption agencies or in the poverty stricken family.

Plus if you did what you could to protect yourself (which 54% of woman who get abortions do.) you have the right to not experience the same consequences as one who didn’t care to use protection.

There are tons of reasons to be pro-choice and most of them are spiritual. Anyone who tries to force their spiritual beliefs on anyone else is selfish…

The key to defending abortion in public debate is to never talk specifics. Talk about "freedom", "choice", and "reproductive rights". If you get into the mechanics of what abortion actually is and does (and how often it does it), the debate becomes unwinnable. Planned Parenthood has made an art of defending and profiting from abortion without ever really talking about it – providing a host of reasons for why a pregnant woman might not be ready to have a baby (and ignoring the fact that the baby is already there).
