The unborn are more than just a group of cells. They are infants who deserve the right of the same life, liberty and happiness we demand for ourselves. "[The zygote], formed by the union of an oocyte and a sperm, is the beginning of a new human being."
Keith L. Moore, Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology, 7th edition. Philadelphia, PA: Saunders, 2008. p. 2.
Growth in the womb is a rapid process; All systems are in place by week eight. An accurate understanding of prenatal development makes it impossible to argue that abortion is the mere removal of undifferentiated cell tissue or that the developing embryo is simply a part of the mother’s body.
The anti-abortion stance is often based upon the writings and declarations of the psalmist David. The following scripture is a song of praise to the Lord for His provision and blessings to the unborn. David acknowledges that the Lord and Him alone is responsible for our creation.
Psalm 139, 1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
Abortion is a serious sin against not only the unborn but against the Most High and Holy God, our Creator. It is a method of "birth control" that is sanctioned by the government and is genocide of the lowest order. While we condemn genocide as practiced by Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin and that practiced by the governments such as that of Rwanda, it is apparent that when abortion is condoned it is also genocide.
abor·tion (ə-bôr’shən) noun — is the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus; especially: the medical procedure of inducing expulsion of a human fetus to terminate a pregnancy. Abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world, but the average person knows almost nothing of its gruesome reality. Year after year, it lurks in the shadows, quietly destroying almost 4,000 innocent human beings a day in the U.S. and 130,000 a day worldwide. In the U.S., this is happening because seven Supreme Court Justices decided that abortion was a constitutionally protected act. Without a vote, without public debate, abortion came in through the back door, never having to bear up under the weight of significant public scrutiny. Today, abortion is a billion-dollar industry which enjoys the support of very influential people in very high places. High schools and universities go to great lengths to graphically expose the dangers of smoking, drunk-driving and STD’s, but take a pass when it comes to abortion.
There are essentially two issues which must be resolved concerning unborn embryos and fetuses. The first is, "Are they human beings?" The second is, "Should they be recognized as persons under the law?" We’ve already established that there is no debate on the first question. It is a matter of plain, objective science. Embryos and fetuses are fully and individually human from the moment of fertilization on. If this were not true, if unborn children were not genetically-distinct human beings, there would be no need to even talk about rights of personhood.
There is a very real sense in which the need to answer this second question is, in itself, an absurdity. If you look up the word "person" in your average dictionary (we’ll use Dictionary.com), you’ll find something like this:
Person n. A human being.
A person, simply put, is a human being. This fact should be enough. The intrinsic humanity of unborn children, by definition, makes them persons and should, therefore, guarantee their protection under the law. For more than thirty-five years, however, this has not been the case in America. The situation we are left with is this. There is a huge and singular group of living human beings who have no protection under the law and are being killed en masse every day. Is that not astounding?! It is astounding, but not wholly unprecedented.
In short, it is government sanctioned murder and an abomination. Just as the prophets of Baal offered children to their god by burning them alive.
In Christ,
